Agriculture, the Environment & Consumption

Hello Friends and friendly people,

As I mentioned last post, I am going to be working with the Protected Areas Management (PAM) team in Honduras and I will probably be working on a whole lot of different projects but I hope to learn about the relationship between agriculture, the environment, and consumption in Honduras.  I am very interested in these topics here in the United States as well as how American consumers and food producers impact/are impacted by foreign consumers and producers.

In particular, I have enjoyed the growth in the number of people who are concerned consumers–that is, people who are aware of where their food comes from, who produces, and their roles in the market system.  With the release of such films as Food, Inc. and Super-Size Me and the publication of Michael Pollan’s personal manifestos on food, there are clearly lots of sources for information about agriculture and consumption.  I think that it is very important to pay attention to issues raised by these different sources of media.  Several issues that I believe need to be discussed include:

*Who are our farmers? Where do they farm? What do they farm?

*How does our food get to our mouth?

*How do our agricultural practices shape and change land and land use?

*What do we eat and why?

*How does our food make us feel?

So anyways, I am interested in all of these things both here and in Latin America (specifically, Honduras).  I would love to hear from any of you (I think there are some of “you” out there) about what you know and feel about these things! Please share with me…I have more stuff to share soon.

Eat your veggies.
