Hello friends!
I have arrived in Honduras and I am now an official Peace Corps trainee. Things here in Honduras are going well so far. We arrived in the middle of the rainy season so it is pouring outside but that just makes hanging out and brushing up on local slang with my host family a lot easier!
We are training outside of the capital right now as an entire group for the next three weeks. We have daily language classes, sessions about different things such as security-safety, and medical stuff. Our group is great so far. I am really excited to get to know everyone and become friends. I feel like I have moved onto a freshman floor again here in HOnduras. Everyone is scoping each other out and trying to make friends.
I am living with a host family here and they are rreally nice. They have hosted Peace COrps trainees before so they definitely are accustomed to having oddball gringos around their house. Today, we watched the US-Ghana game (Clint Dempsey, I still love you even though you lost) and ate lunch. I have been playing a lot with the grandchilren in the family. They are teaching me ¨hondurenismos¨ (local Honduran words and phrases) and I am teaching them card games.
I am looking forward to next week when we start having more intense classes and we have interviews about the specifica projects that we want to pursue.
I hope that all of you are doing well! Please send updates!! I cannot promise that I will respond quickly but I sure will get back to you.
Peace.
Congratulations on the Peace Corp gig! You are perfect for it and will do amazing things. Just a quick note to let you know that I am praying for you. We will be in touch.
Hey Ms Carleen,
This is the first time I had a chance to read your blog. Jerry and I drove up to Iowa for the 4th of July. We stopped by Des Moines to visit the current owner of Maid Rite …Jer might put a small version of this concept in his building. We will take off for Wisconsin in a few days to visit some friends about 60 miles west of Osh Kosh. Then we will drive back to Iowa via Iowa city and St James Mo. I taught a 3 week course for HS kids that did not pass Geometry the first time …and they all passed this time…whopee! I hope you like your Peace corps experience, I will do my best to follow your experiences. Do you work with education of children? I know there is a great need for this. Take care of you sweetie,
Love,
Susan
Hi Carly – Congrats! We are glad to hear you made it to the Honduras. Mrs Oates and I (ok, Bill & Kathryne; now that you’re a college grad, i guess we can use our real names) are looking forward to following your activities there. Hey, if you can do it from down there, once you know the specific projects you’re working on, post some links to background info/materials, so we can get up to speed on particulars to which you’re projects pertain. Kaylie just got back from building houses in Acuna, Mexico. While she was down there, i realized this internet thing is kind of a useful tool for keeping up-to-date… it might be around for a while afterall. Take care, Carly… post more updates… and stuff!
