Training, part two

Hello friends and family,

This past week has been a really good time! Although the training hours are long (I get up at 5:30 everyday and do not get home til around 5:30), it has been fun to bond with the other trainees and prepare for the two years that we will all be working in Honduras.

On Sunday, I celebrated the 4th of July with my friends by having a bbq and eating some peanut butter, sun chips, and drinking coca cola (and listening to some american tunes together).

I also had a training this week about family gardens (huertos familiares).  In my site, I will probably at some point work with women to organize family gardens to provide supplemental nutrition and income.  A current volunteer and her community counterpart came to our training center and taught us about hillside farming techniques, creating seed beds, and matching companion crops here. We also learned some new vocabulary. For example, I learned that a gallina ciega (blind chicken) is a harmful larvae found in the soil that likes to feed on organic material and roots. We learned how to turn the soil and get rid of these little guys during our training.

Tomorrow, I am headed out of town to visit a current volunteer with another trainee. We will be spending a couple days at her site learning about what she does and what not. I am really excited about this!

Also, I have to thank the Onyshkos for sending me a package and my mom for writing me a letter! I appreciate all forms of communication!!

I hope all is well with all of you.

Peace,

CK

    Hi Carly,
It is wonderful to hear what you have been doing in Honduras. I am so happy that you are enjoying your work and the people that surround you. Things here have been pretty much the same. Last weekend was a lot of fun…my neice got married; Jess was in the wedding and Kyle and his girlfriend were here. It is always fun having everyone here! I think about you everytime I look at your mom and dad’s house…keep up the good work. It is wonderful to be able to follow your experiences this way.
    Love You,
    Ann
