Off to Field Based Training

Hello all,

Tomorrow all of the Protected Areas Management trainees (PAMistas or PAMers) are headed off to our new training site. We will be there for seven weeks learning all sorts of different things from how to make improved stoves to terrace farming. I am really excited for some field training and it will be great to work with our small group.

During FBT, I will also be doing a mini-project with IHCAFE (or the Instituto HondureƱo de Cafe). IHCAFE works with coffee growers all around HOnduras to improve their access to commercial markets and the like. I am really excited to get to know all the different layers of coffee growing in the country. Also, in Honduras it is very uncommon for women to have any management in agriculture so this is going to be an opportunity for me to gain a lot of knowledge that I will be able to use during my two years of service.

______

Here a couple of funny things that I think you all might enjoy about Honduras:

1. If a man cooks or enjoys preparing food, he is basicallly considered gay. Sorry to all the guys who are trying to impress their ladies in the kitchen!

2. The buses here are all old American buses from all around the country. For example, I regularly ride on the Warsaw Community School District bus to get to training.

3. You might actually need to be concerned if you are wearing a red backpack because there are lots of bulls and cows on my walk home…I have a red backpack.

I hope everyone is doing well in the US!

Peace,

Carly

  1. Car, I will be sending you a beige or black backpack tomorrow! :) Mom

  2. We’re enjoying your updates, Carly. Just to let you know your Uncle Ed likes to cook and be in the kitchen – much more than I! He’s excited about your work in the coffee beans and hopes it might lead to a new source for fresh beans. Sorry about your red backpack. Perhaps you can trade with someone who isn’t on to that yet. I’m making zuchini bread tonight from fresh zuchini Bridget bought at the Farmers Market in CR this morning. Christine’s starting a weeklong camping trip with another teacher and 20 students. Mike’s at a marching band sectional practice and I need to go pick him up. We enjoy reading your updates. Take care! Love, Aunt Sue and Uncle Ed

  3. Hi Carly! Finally am catching up on your blogsite. By reading this and visiting with your mom last week, it sounds like you are doing well. Thinking of you and look forward to reading about your adventure.

    Love, Lynda
